Blog Post: How to “Make it” as a Singer/Songwriter
Music industry leaders agree that there is no sure-fire way to “make it” in the music industry. However, there are a few things that appear over and over again in lists of tips and tricks from people in the business.
The first and most important step towards becoming a professional singer or songwriter is to master your craft. Spend time perfecting your voice and get to know your range. Study the early leaders of the genre you write in- know Elvis if you’re into pop and Johnny Cash if you write or sing country. The harsh truth is that you need to be phenomenal to make it in the music biz, and treating your voice or lyricism as an instrument will help you become a master.
Once you have your vocals or writing abilities down, get your work to the public! Post videos on YouTube, show up at open mic nights, and give a demo out at the entrance to concerts. Write songs for a local band or help a theater with the production of a musical. The more people who have your music in their hands, the more recognition you get for your talent. Recognition leads to offers for work, and more work gets you one step closer to “making it” as a full-time musician.
In this digital age, when everyone is connected through the internet, networking is a key component for any field. Network with other people in the music industry. This will lead to helpful advice, job offers, insider information on advancement opportunities, and possibly a recording contract. Connect with anyone and everyone with ties to the music industry, and follow through with an irresistible personality and ravishing talent.
Master your craft, get your music to the public, and network with industry leaders. Combining these bits of advice isn’t a foolproof plan for breaking into the music industry, but it’s a start.
